INTRODUCTION
The present tense is a verb form used to describe an action or event that is happening now, in the present moment. It is also used to describe a general truth, habit or state that is true in the present.
In English, there are two types of present tense: simple present and present continuous.
Simple present is used to describe habitual actions, general truths, or states that are true in the present. It is formed by using the base form of the verb, or the verb without the “-s” or “-es” ending that is added in the third person singular. For example:
- “I eat breakfast every day.” (habitual action)
- “Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.” (general truth)
- “She speaks Spanish fluently.” (state that is true in the present)
Present continuous is used to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking or around the present time. It is formed by using the auxiliary verb “to be” in the present tense followed by the present participle (verb + “-ing”) of the main verb. For example:
- “I am studying right now.” (action happening at the moment of speaking)
- “She is taking a shower at the moment.” (action happening around the present time)
Both simple present and present continuous can also be used to describe future events that are planned or scheduled to happen in the near future. For example, “I am meeting my friend tomorrow” (present continuous) or “The concert starts at 8 pm tonight” (simple present).
It’s important to note that the present tense can be used in combination with other tenses to express more complex ideas about time and actions, such as the present perfect or present perfect continuous tense.
