PAST TENSE (VERB BE)

Read Time:4 Minute, 46 Second

INTRODUCTION

The past tense of the verb “be” is “was” (singular) or “were” (plural).

In English, the verb “be” is irregular, which means it does not follow a regular pattern when conjugated in different tenses. The past tense of “be” is used to refer to a previous state, action or situation that has already occurred.

Examples:

  • I was happy yesterday. (singular)
  • They were at the beach all day. (plural)
  • He was a great athlete in high school. (singular)
  • We were late for the meeting. (plural)

It is important to note that “was” is used with singular subjects (I, he, she, it), while “were” is used with plural subjects (you, we, they). However, there are some exceptions to this rule, such as in the case of the subjunctive mood, where “were” is used with singular subjects to express hypothetical or unlikely situations (e.g. If I were rich, I would travel the world).

Overall, understanding the proper use of the past tense of “be” is essential for communicating effectively in English.
